We drove from Norfolk, Nebraska yesterday, leaving Bev and Chuck's after a scrumptious lunch and lots of great hospitality. Made it to North Platte just a bit after sundown. We were headed for Denver, and excited about seeing the Rocky Mountains!
However, late in the evening, we received a note from Bev alerting us to the possibility of snow in the Rockies. We decided to rise early and hit the road for a longer drive than usual, in order to make it south of the Denver area, possibly Colorado Springs or Pueblo, where we would spend Monday night. Then, at least, we could avoid all the snow and still see the mountains.
But it was not to be, because when we awoke in the morning, we learned about the newly-named winter storm, "Ajax". All the towns in Colorado, and east of there, were going to get hit with high winds and snow, turning into rain in the high plains.
Thus, we headed due south on state highway 83, with an eye to getting through most of Kansas by the end of our traveling day. Happy that we left as early as we did, we had a day of driving in warm sunshine, and now we were heading for the Cimarron National Grassland.
Today in Kansas we saw our first tumbleweeds!
